Minimalistic portraits with a natural touch by Peony Yip

Artist on Tumblr, on Behance, Instagram

Peony Yip (also known under her pseudonym ‘The White Deer’) is an illustrator living and working in Hong Kong. In her work Peony combines beautifully drawn portraits of women (just look at the hair!) with natural elements like flowers, insects and animals. Peony often adds digital elements to her hand-drawn work: the stern shapes and lines compliment the minimalistic, clean aesthetic of her drawings perfectly.

Ei Kaneko

Ei Kaneko is a Tokyo based artist who creates moody and disorienting portraits with graphite. It’s interesting how he uses fragments of images to create a new meaning. What that new meaning may be I’m not sure, but I love that piece at top which juxtaposes a detailed drawing of a skull with the frail figure of an androgynous person. I found an interesting article over on Art is Alive where he describes his work as “a void identity.”

Kim Byungkwan: PORTRAIT_10 / DH

on Behance

Kim Byungkwan is a South Korean artist who takes images of Hollywood stars, namely beloved and iconic starlets, and breaks their image with scribbles and smears of paint. He creates them with acrylic on paper, giving you what you need to “get” who the person is—and then he rips it apart. They remind of monsterized and zombified depictions of celebrities but done in a frightening and manic way—but they retail a fascinating beauty. They’re like caricatures made by a crazy person.

Alexandra Becker-Black: Fleeting Beauty:

Fascinated with classical art and the work of Michelangelo from a very young age, American painter Alexandra Becker-Black creates dream-like watercolours that seek to convey a quiet power and effortlessness in the same way that old masters did. Based in Portland, Oregon, the artist has developed her very own watercolour technique that is characteristic of the ethereal yet almost photographical portraits she creates

Vladimir Fridkes: Svetlana Zakharova. Still frame

‘Svetlana Zakharova. Still Frame’ by photographer Vladimir Fridkes is dedicated to global ballet star, Bolshoi Theatre prima ballerina, National Artist of Russia, winner of the State Russian Prize, and member of the French Order of Arts and Letters, the brilliant ballerina Svetlana Zakharova.

Svetlana Zakharova is at the peak of her career and is constantly in search of new creative outlets. She agreed to take on a new role, part of a creative duet between ballerina and photographer. Zakharova selected her partner, the photographer Vladimir Fridkes.

Svetlana Zakharova worked together with the photographer to create a new image for herself. Photography, a mirror with a magic amalgam, presented the opportunity to reveal the creative personality of the ballerina, to show her enormous potential. The work was done behind closed doors. For the museum, as for the viewers, this project is something completely new. Vladimir Fridkes’s project ‘Svetlana Zakharova. Still Frame’ sheds a new light on the physical and dramatic talent of this famous ballerina.
